My poor sweet Caroline has had a time with her ears. She got her first double ear infections around Thanksgiving and then again a week before Christmas. I'm beginning to wonder if she ever got over the first set of infections in the first place. Anyways, after a week of antibiotics around Christmas, I still didn't think she was getting any better. When we were in Columbia on the Saturday after Christmas, she cried and cried and cried for about an hour and NOTHING calmed her down. She was so pitiful.
So, we took her again to the pediatrician on New Year's Eve and she had one, possibly two, ruptured ear drums!! Doesn't that sound so awful? (Her ears were too nasty to 100% confirm, but what the NP heard and saw, that's what it sounded like.) From the way the NP was talking - I get the impression that this is farily common with no lasting effects - I was so worried that maybe it affected her hearing, but NO, thank goodness! And also, the pain was them actually rupturing (I'm assuming that Saturday in Columbia) and they would start to feel better afterwards...thank goodness she still wasn't in that pain.
Soooooo...we're on ANOTHER round of different antibiotics, finished a round of antibiotic ear drops and LOTS of lovin'. She seems to be doing much better and they going to look at her ears again at her 9 month check-up next week. I still intend to talk ot my pediatrician about a referral to an ENT, too.
Have any of you had problems with ear infections? (Meredith & Wendy...I know you have!) Or, can you share any old wives tales about how to prevent them???
