Gymnastics: A Year Later

Wow - what a difference a year makes.  My little girl has changed so much in the past year!  But, she's still got that same sassy pose.  Oh, if I only knew then what I know now about her little attitude....

I think we have found her calling.  We signed Caroline up for the summer gymnastics session last year and she loved it.  But, I decided to put her in dance for the fall/winter/spring session.  Once summer came around, I enrolled her in the summer gymnastics program again and let her choose between that and dance for this year's fall/winter/spring session.  She choose gymnastics!  Although, I'm not surprised...she's got a ton of energy that needs to be let out somehow!

She is amazing at gymnastics.  Her arms and legs seem to be naturally toned.  She's super strong.  She knows the difference between "good toes" and "bad toes".  Ha!  She LOVES it!

Weight Watchers: Week 4

Weekly Weight Loss:
2.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss:
8.8 lbs

Holy cow!  I didn't know I had it in me!  Only 1.2 lbs to go and I'll meet my 10 pound weight loss goal.  I decided this morning that I'm going to break up this journey into 3 mini-goals:

1.  Loose 10 lbs.
2.  Get to 130 lbs.
3.  Get to 125 lbs.

That seems manageable, right?  Mini-goal #1, almost complete! (This whole process is NOT about my actual weight, but more about how I feel in my clothes.)

I had a good week this week.  I ended up having a cheat day on Tuesday, thanks to my aunt, Gayle, and her one-word text... "Grouchos?"  Uh, yes, please!   But, made up for it in the end.  I even went out for sushi one night and assumed I ate within my points and called it a night.  Isn't that how it works?  Hey, I had edemame and brought my own light Asian salad dressing.  What?  Until next week...

Weight Watchers: Week 3

Weekly Weight Loss:
0.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss:
6.0 lbs
Well, last week didn't go as planned.  Actually, it went just as planned.  I did remarkably well all week and had my cheat night on Sunday, before my weigh in this morning. I think know that was my biggest mistake.  As of Sunday morning, I was down 2.2 lbs from last week.  But, I suppose I ate all the wrong foods yesterday at lunch (and 2 glasses of sweet tea.  What?) and that did me in.  My plan is to skip cheat night this week and stick to going rogue as close to after my weigh-in as possible.

The highlight of my week?  Ha...was NOT lunch yesterday.  Although, it was, by far the best meal I had all week. But, I cooked an amazing meal one night last week that I was so proud of.  I found some southwestern flavored chicken strips at Piggly Wiggly and made chicken tacos.  Thanks, Meredith, for telling me about whole grain taco shells!  1 point for 1 shell.  Yeah!  Anyways, shells stuffed with chicken, taco sauce, light sour cream, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, corn & black beans!  SO yummy!  I could have eat 5 of them.  But, I only ate 2. :-)

Breast Is MY Best

Disclaimer: This post is not intended to start a debate on whether or not breastfeeding is right for everybody.  I believe a mother has every right in the world to choose how they want to feed their child and that their decision, whatever it maybe be, should be supported by all of their loved ones.

There are three reasons for breast-feeding: the milk is always at the right temperature; it comes in attractive containers; and the cat can't get it. ~Irena Chalmers

As Anna turns 8 months old today and still on breastmilk, I have to give myself a pat on the back.  Nursing and pumping when you have one child to tend to was fairly easy. However, when I got pregnant with Anna, I immediately started to worry if I would have time to dedicate to the process like I did when it was just me, Daddy & Caroline.

My decision to breastfeed Caroline was an easy one.  I saw how easy my very dear friend, Emily, made breastfeeding look and I thought "I'll give it a try.  If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work."  I have never been of the mindset that I HAD to nurse my children.  I just thought that all mothers tried it and for whichever the reason might be, it may or may not work.  End of story.

But, I fell in love with it.  Talk about a special bonding time with your baby.  I have no reason why it became so close to my heart, but I sure fell hard for it.  Turns out, I'm a little milk maid.  With both babies, I was able to produce far more than what each was consuming and it gave me the opportunity to develop a stash of milk that would make a cow blush.

I had two separate approaches with each baby. With Caroline - I strictly nursed & pumped for 6 weeks.  At 6 weeks old, in preparation for her to start school at 8 weeks old, I quit nursing and continued to pump until she was 7 months old.  At that point, I was able to stretch out my frozen milk until she was 11 months old when I weaned her onto cows milk.  With Anna - I continued to nurse her for much longer than 6 weeks.  In fact, she was 7 1/2 months old when I nursed her for the last time.  I was able to send milk to school with her and nurse her in the mornings and the evenings.  She had no issues switching from bottle to breast.  Caroline, on the other hand, was a different story.  Once we started giving her the bottle, she never wanted to nurse again.

I was starting to dread the day that I had to stop nursing Anna.  I know there comes a time when you just know it's the right time to stop and a couple of weeks ago, I just knew.  Anna continues to get bigger and bigger and busier as the passing of each new day.  To be honest, it was hard to sit still to nurse for 5 minutes.  And that just led to frustration for both parties involved.  And even though I knew it was time, I was getting sadder and sadder thinking about it.

But, then it dawned on me.  Yes, I'll miss it because I have really enjoyed that bonding time with Anna.  And there's nothing like being given the satisfaction of doing what you have put your mind to and looking down and seeing those sweet eyes light up because she's so darn happy.  But, I was good at it.  I finally found something where I could establish a goal and see it to fruition.  I can't say that about too much in my life. This?  CHECK.

Caroline never had a drop of formula and I hope that I can maintain that with Anna, as well.  I don't feel like I have as much milk frozen with Anna as I did with Caroline, so she might be on cows milk a little sooner than 11 months, but that is something I will have to discuss with our pediatrician.

Above all, I have to thank my dear husband for supporting me.  I remind him daily how much money I saved him by not buying formula.  Although, I think I should have bought stock in Lansinoh with the rate I went through milk bags.  Ha!  He was behind me 110% the entire journey and was always there to help me whenever I needed it.  My dream is to be a supportive friend to all my mom friends out there regardless of their feeding decisions.  If you can provide a home with love and meaningful relationships, then all the rest will fall into place.

Tubes and Tongues

A couple of weeks ago, my sweet Anna got tubes in her ears and also had her tongue clipped.  I would like to say that we had an easy time with her recovery, but that would be a lie.  Thankfully, from the standpoint of what she had done, we didn't have any problems.  But, the gas from the anesthesia made her miserable.

When her procedure was done, Wally and I walked through the doors to recovery and heard her screaming like you wouldn't believe.  I had NEVER heard her scream like that before.  I got kind of spooked because when we walked in her door, she had blood coming out of her mouth from her tongue being clipped.  I tried to nurse her because she hadn't eaten yet that morning and that didn't go well at all.  She screamed the entire way home and almost all morning.

I knew it was the gas because everytime she burped or tooted, her entire body would shake and then she would scream like she was in horrific pain.  I kept her full of Mylicon & Gripe Water and that didn't seem to even touch it.  I called both the ENT and my pediatrician and they said this was normal.  But, she was not my baby girl.

It took her almost a week to get back to normal.  She stayed gassy for days.  Thankfully, she got to where it wasn't painful to pass the gas, but I was really starting to worry about her!

She nursed a little better after having her tongue clipped and I've noticed that she's not near as messy when she takes a bottle.  But, I was more concerned about her speech development above all.

Weight Watchers: Week 2

Weekly Weight Loss:
1.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss:
5.2 lbs

I survived another week.  And it wasn't all bad, either!  I do wish I had lost a tad more, but 1.8 lbs is far better than none, right?

The highlight of my week was my cheat night.  And I will probably always say that until the day I quit Weight Watchers.  HA!  I do look forward to it every week.  We met up with The Martins & The Smathers and allllllll the kids at Ultimate California Pizza: Game Zone for pizza and games.  In fact, there were so many of us, they stuck us in the (secluded) party room.  Can you blame them???  I had the delicious Santa Fe chopped salad...something I've been craving!

Here's to another week of making smart choices!

Weight Watchers: Week 1

Weekly Weight Loss:
3.4 lbs

Total Weight Loss:
3.4 lbs

Wow - I can't believe I lost 3.4 lbs. the first week.  Go me.  I know each week won't be like this, but this sure gave me a kick in the rear to get it going.  I actually had a great week.  It helps that Wally is doing it with me because it makes meal planning a thousand times easier.

I've done really well this time around, too, finding filling meals rather than just throwing some random foods together.  One night last week, we had rice, PF Chang dumplings (frozen food aisle) and broccoli for 7 points!  And we both were way full when we were done.  I think I could get used to this.

Another thing that's been helping me on my journey is keeping up with 2 of my besties, Meredith & Wendy, who are also doing the old-school point system with me, too.  We try to keep each other in the loop about what we're eating throughout the day.  It's two-fold, really - (1) you get some awesome ideas for meals and (2) you have to fess up when you've been a bad girl.

Wally and I were actually able to go out to eat one night.  We went to Chick Fil A and found low-point options for each of us.

Speaking of going out to eat - we are allowing ourselves to splurge one day a week on a meal. Yesterday, we went to Mellow Mushroom for lunch after church.  And, you know what, I think I've learned my lesson.  That pizza was entirely too greasy and we both felt pretty gross afterwards.  So, maybe not quite so big next time.  :-)

PS...Wally's done well, too! He lost 5 lbs. the first week!
