Potty Training: Day 3 (Gymnastics)

Instead of doing a lengthy post today, I'll just give you a short rundown of Caroline's progress on her potty training. I hope I don't have a post titled "Potty Training: Day 5,304 (First Day of 2nd Grade)" in the future. HAHA!!!

Had to change Caroline at 3 AM - she wet the bed and did not wake up.

Woke up dry at 6:45 and pottied soon after. That is, after I withheld her waffle and Curious George on TV.

Apparently had messes all day at school.

Came home after school and did not potty. Very nervous about what to do since Tuesdays are gymnastics days. If it were any other situation, I would let her go and if she had an accident, then we'd deal with it. But, I didn't suspect that the gymnastics people would appreciate pee-pee on their floor. I decided to put a diaper on over her undies.

Tried to get her to go before gymnastics at the gym. Fail.

After gymnastics, we went to IHOP where I changed her clothes in the back of the car and she had NOT pottied at all! YEAH! We changed clothes, ran inside and she went inside. About 15 minutes later, she said her tummy hurts and I ran her to the potty where she went again! Double YEAH!

Got home, pottied and went to bed. NO accidents on my watch on Tuesday!!!

Potty Training: Day 2 (First Day at School)

Ok, just as I suspected, Caroline did not wake up dry on Monday morning. What really happened was - I got up myself at 1 AM (because, let's face it, you don't need to be 9 months pregnant to have something sitting on your bladder) and while I was up, I went to check on Caroline's status. Sure enough, she wet the bed but it obviously didn't bother her one bit. So, I changed her in her sleep, removed a towel and went back to sleep.

The good news is that when she woke up at 6:30 the next morning, she WAS dry! HOORAY! And got up and pottied immediately! So, an hour later, off to school we went. With 10 pair of undies, 2 extra outfits (to add to the 3 extra outfits at school) and a hope and a prayer. Eek!

I called the school at about 10:45 Monday morning to check on her and she had only had one accident thus far. Great news. But, apparently the afternoon didn't go that well. She came home with 3 dirty outfits (and wet socks...add that to my list for Tuesday's bag). Baby steps.

That evening was hectic, by my own doing. We made plans to go to dinner with the Martin's and all the kids so I knew I might be getting myself into something that I probably didn't need to. But, I stuck to my guns and went with an arsenal of clothes, SOCKS and undies.

As soon as we got to the restaurant, I attempted to take Caroline to the potty. But, that was the first time she sat on a big one and was terrified. Meaning no potty. I took her about 10 minutes later and she decided it wasn't that big of a deal and went. Success again! Oh, but that was the last of the night. She pottied twice in her booster seat and once on me on the way to the bathroom. Fail.

By that time, we were done with dinner and was ready to let the kids run around in the arcade. Against my better judgement (although, I was thinking of the "sanitation" issue), I put a diaper on Caroline over her undies. That way if she went, she would at least be uncomfortable. That'll show her. Ha...joke's on me. She went and wasn't uncomfortable. I changed her one last time at the restaurant and by the time we got home, she was still dry. She did refuse to go before bedtime, but we did the same as the night before - no diapers and two towels.

Potty Training: Day 1 (First Full Day)

For some reason, I decided to put Caroline back in a diaper over night for the first night. Not sure why, but I guess I just really didn't think about it. On Sunday morning, she woke up dry (which happens about 50% of the time), sat on the potty and was successful at going.

I was eye-balling my HUGE stack of undies that I got because most all of my friends suggested to get at least 40 pair. Sounds excessive, I know; but all I could think was "How many of these are we going to go through today?" By the time lunchtime came around, she had only had one accident!!! She had been in only 2 pair of undies by noon. I stayed over her like a hawk and kept reminding her to tell mommy when it was time to go. And on some accounts, I'd just ask her to try. I was beginning to think I made a mistake by buying so many skivvies.

Naptime came and went - she woke up dry from a 2 hour nap. Not extremely rare, but I was just excited that this was our first nap with no diapers and she was not wet! Huge success!!!

But, then the afternoon came around. After bragging to a few friends & family about how extremely well I thought the morning was going...the afternoon was quite the opposite. Every time I turned around she was tinkling. And I'm talking like 5 minutes after having gone on the potty. I probably went through at least 9 pair just that afternoon.

I suspect that Sunday afternoon is really what this whole process will be like for a few days. And that Sunday morning was an exception. But, we are not getting frustrated. I know Caroline is getting aggravated with me standing over her saying "Caroline, don't forget to tell Mommy when you have to go potty." Or "We don't go pee-pee in our pants. We pee-pee on the potty." For Pete's sake, I'm getting tired of saying it myself. But, frustrated we are not.

I do think by the time this is all over with, she will be tired of eating marshmallows. I should have started with a smaller reward. Even the mini-marshmallows. But, nooooo...we HAVE to keep the bigger ones on hand. (What?)

That night, Caroline went on the potty before bed and I laid her in there with no diaper and 2 towels on her sheets. How did that turn out? Well, you'll just have to wait til my next post!

Potty Training: Day .5

A couple of months ago, my friend forwarded me the 3 Day Potty Training Manual that she used and considered a huge success. I did a little more research on the method and found wonderful reviews. Without going into too much detail, the idea is to stick close to your child for 3 days, catch them in the act of "going" and redirect them to the potty (more or less). I made up my mind to do this months ago, but was having a hard time finding a free 3 days to actually commit.

Caroline has been showing signs for a couple of months that she was ready to start being potty trained. I started to notice a change in her facial expressions and body stance when she was wetting her diaper. And then she would hide and get quiet when she ::you know:: in her diaper. We got her a "big girl potty" a while back and she used it from time to time, with our prompting, and we gave her a big marshmallow as a reward each time she successfully went.

The straw that broke the camel's back? Last week after she had peed in the potty she ran away from us and went in her room to shut the door. After a couple of minutes of letting her be alone, her Daddy and I walked in and she was attempting to put a diaper back on herself. I say "attempting" because if she had actually had the diaper on right instead of backwards I really think she would have succeeded. Wally and I looked at each other and said "This is enough."

So, off to Walmart I went. I bought about 6 packs of undies because that's what EVERYBODY has said to do. And what do I know? I really hadn't intended on starting this weekend but by around lunch time on Saturday I realized that I had nothing to do until work on Monday so why the heck not?

So, begin Potty Training: Day .5 I'm obviously not following the 3 Day Potty Training to a tee because I started late within the weekend, but I am most certainly committed to following the method as closely as I can. I may be over-thinking this or shooting myself in the foot and prolonging the process, but it's a start and it's not going to last forever (is it?).

The first (half) day went well. She had some accidents, but I have to give her credit. She rarely has full blown accidents. Caroline tends to tinkle in her drawers, then can stop herself and hold it until she makes it to the potty. I think that's half the battle right there. There were also times when she realized she had to go and held it until she went to the potty. Even better! Plus she gets SOOOO excited when she goes.

Stay tuned for the entire journey, whether you like it or not! HAHA!

Fun Weekend!

What a fun weekend! The Smathers were in town this weekend visiting their family and were kind enough to ask us to join them at the beach & dinner on Friday! The girls had a great time playing - Caroline enjoyed herself at the beach more so that I ever would have thought. She's not one to get her hands and feet dirty. So, it was a battle at first, but then she got used to it.

Don't tell anybody, but I kinda enjoyed myself at the beach, too. There were enough adults around that the girls were occupied with them, building pools and castles, that I was able to relax for a minute or two.

I'm hoping that next year, Kristen & Reese will be able to come down the same week during the summer. Brooke and I agreed that that was the only thing missing from our fun weekend.

Caroline is starting to finally look at the camera and smile rather than just smiling doing whatever she's doing.

Side note: doesn't her hair look yellow? Some days it looks white blonde, some days it's more blonde blonde and other days it's a yellow blonde color!

Look at my little model posing

Sadie walked in the house and immediately went straight for the baby doll! I think she had a doll radar!! PS - notice they're in matching dresses! (Yes, we did that on purpose.)

At dinner on Friday night. The girls ran and ran and ran and ran.

How sweet is this picture!?!?!

Don't they look like they're up to no good?

I'm sad that my camera battery died in between dinner and ice cream. We would have gotten some cute pictures with the girls eating their strawberry ice cream with sprinkles on top.

Music To My Ears

I had my 12 week appointment today and I got to hear the baby's heartbeat! It was beating at 155 bpm...perhaps another girl? Caroline's was usually a little higher than that (ha...I wonder if that should have been any foresight as to how busy she would turn out to be?)

I also have to brag on this pregnancy, too. I am days shy out of my first trimester and I never did get sick. Well, just once. But, let's just say that I found out earlier this time that I can't eat lettuce this time around either. Lettuce on a sandwich - great. Lots of lettuce in a salad - not so great. And it's not a nose-related food aversion. It just doesn't agree with my body. RIP big salads with lots of cheese and ranch on top. I'll miss you.

Sorry to always compare this pregnancy to Caroline's. I don't have anything else to compare it to. But, it's fun to see the similarities and the differences. I will walk away from this wondering if the similarities in the pregnancies are indicative of similarities in personalities. And vice versa with the differences. Like the morning sickness...I never got sick with Caroline. So, by not getting sick with this one, does that mean I'm going to have another girl? Thankfully I'm not near as tired as I was with Caroline. I still get worn out at the end of the day, but not so bad that I have to come home and nap.

My next appointment is on July 19th. Can't wait!!!

Surprise!

It's not much of a surprise anymore! Since I've announced this about two weeks ago, but who's counting?

Baby Doyle #2 is due January 1, 2012!!!!

We were just as shocked as you are. Kind of. It's been a long six months of watching the calendar and lo and behold, the month we decide to relax our minds and wait a few months to regroup...I get pregnant! I'd be lying if I didn't say I was starting to get a little stressed. We got pregnant with Caroline so quickly and easily that I naively expected the same this time around. But since I'm working with "a man down" or "half a working system" (both per Wally; and as a result of my first pregnancy before Caroline) I guess it took a little longer than before.

We've had multiple doctor's appointments, two rounds of bloodwork, two ultrasounds and have seen the heartbeat. So far, everything looks perfect. My next appointment on Monday, June 20th.

January 1st is actually the third due date that's been assigned to me. My original due date was December 25th based on...well...you know how they calculate that. But, when I went for my first ultrasound, the tech immediately said "Your bloodwork numbers do not match your due date." And sure enough, we could tell that I wasn't as far along as I thought I was. Which pushed my due date back to January 4th.

But, since all she could see on the ultrasound was the yolk sack and no visible "fetus" at this point, January 4th was a shot in the dark. She scheduled me for a repeat scan 10 days later where we saw the actual baby and my due date was adjusted to January 1st after it was measured.

I have been feeling fairly good. Somethings I have forgotten since being pregnant with Caroline. Somethings are different from when I was pregnant with Caroline. But, comparatively speaking this one has been fairly similar to the last one. I haven't been feeling 100%, but knock on wood, I have yet to get sick.

That is, aside from the stomach bug that went around our house twice, two horrible sinus infections (and two rounds of pregnancy-approved antibiotics) and something that went around my work that caused a fever and body aches. But, who's counting right? Pregnancy-wise...I've been doing great.

I am nervous about my weight gain. I lost about 20 pounds before I got pregnant being on Weight Watchers. And I'm scared of gaining all that weight back quickly and then some. But, so far I've done pretty good. I still can't eat anything and everything because I have a "full" feeling most of the day. But, sometimes the "starving" feeling takes over and I eat what is closest.

For being 11 weeks along (as of Sunday, 6/12), I feel like I am beginning to show. I don't remember it being this early with Caroline, but I've been told repeatedly that you show earlier the second time around. I think it's more of where I gain my weight anyways and not really a "pregnancy bump" but don't think I haven't pulled out the maternity clothes already! I've washed them, folded them and sorted them by season!

Thanks for the prayers, well wishes and for sticking it out through this long post. I've documented all of this mainly for my sake for when my memory starts to go (hello midnight feedings!), but I am still an open book and will share as much as I can with my friends and family.
